Engine & gearbox
Both the engine and gearbox contain oil to provide essential lubrication and protection so to keep running smoothly without problems, they need to have their oil reservoirs replaced as per the manufacturer’s advice.
Gearbox oil in modern cars will only ever need replacing as per manufacturers’ scheduling by a mechanic. However, gearbox oil, engine oil is designed to be topped up by the driver. In fact most manufacturers’ hand books advise you check the oil as often as once a week. This maybe a little over cautious but the point is you should check it regularly; some models of vehicle have been known to use as much as a litre a week. Most average sized engines have between 4-6 litres of oil in them and be warned, if an engine runs out of oil it will very likely destroy itself.
If you do want to top up your oil but you’re not sure which type it needs then please check with us first; you can dramatically reduce the life of an engine by putting the incorrect oil in.
Finally, because the oil of an engine is crucial to its’ long life, servicing the vehicle according to manufacturers’ schedule is essential
