Tyres are one of the most important parts on the vehicle… they keep you on the road! Tyres must be maintained primarily for safety reasons but also legal ones too. If a tyre’s tread falls below 1.6 mm (most new tyres have approx 7-8 mm) then it is considered to be an illegal tyre and the driver’s licence (even if the vehicle is not owned by the driver) will be penalised 3 pts per tyre. Therefore it is possible to lose your licence in one go if all four tyres are illegal. Insurance companies have been known not to payout on accident claims on the grounds that the insured vehicle’s tyres were not maintained as stated in their policy. Speed bumps, tracking and incorrect tyre pressures can often cause premature tyre wear as well as ‘enthusiastic’ driving.

Tracking

The tracking (wheel alignment) of a vehicle should always be checked if any of the wheels have been struck in any way i.e. driven over a particularly large pot hole or hit a high kerb at more than 5 mph. Another indication that the tracking needs to be adjusted is that the vehicle may be pulling to one side i.e. you have to keep adjusting the steering to keep driving in a straight line. You can have just the front wheels aligned but out of good engineering practice we recommend that you have a full four wheel alignment, as do most reputable garages.
